My In-Laws Keep Leaving Me Out of Dinners, So I Taught Them a Lesson

Things rapidly became worse when my in-laws and I (F26) went on a recent family vacation. My mother-in-law always believes that because I’m from a lower-class background, I’m “ignorant” and “uncultured.” She believes I am uncivilized.

My husband abruptly brought up a fancy meal his family had arranged when we got to the hotel. He explained that his mother thought I “wouldn’t know how to handle the food” or behave appropriately at such a gathering when I questioned why I hadn’t been invited. They therefore concluded that it would be preferable for me to remain at the hotel and dine there.

Rather than argue, I simply packed my luggage and let him go. Determining to get out of the situation, I boarded the first aircraft home.

When my husband found out I was gone, he became quite angry. He kept calling me, calling me “unreasonable and ungrateful,” and saying I made him look bad in front of his family. He claimed that he had “pleaded with me to go on the trip.” However, the harm had already been done.

He made it obvious that he was still upset by giving me the silent treatment when he got home. His relatives also didn’t hold back, making deceptive remarks about me on Facebook. The vacation was meant to strengthen our relationship, but instead it exacerbated the conflict between my in-laws and me, and I’m not sure how to resolve it at this point.
