Four friends from Detroit stepped onto the America’s Got Talent stage, and what happened next was something nobody saw coming. As the music started, what began as a dance performance quickly became an emotional voyage—celebrating friendship, passion, and dreams that never fade.
Their story has deep roots: back in 1980 at a high school in Inkster, Michigan, a group of teenage boys formed a dance crew they called The Funkateers. Bursting with youth and energy, they won the school talent show and dove into Detroit’s vibrant dance culture.
For a time, their performances were electrifying. They appeared regularly around town and even got featured on The Scene, a local music and dance TV show. But life inevitably intervened. As they grew older, they went their separate ways—settling into careers in sales, financial services, maintenance, and homeland security. The last time they danced together was in 1989, at a friend’s wedding.
Yet, the dream never truly left them. In 2019, after decades apart, they decided it was time to dance again.
They returned older, with bodies that had changed—but with hearts still beating with the same rhythm.
Standing before the AGT judges, they shared their incredible journey. When Rick James’ “Give It to Me Baby” started playing, it was as if time rewound. Their moves were sharp, their synchronization flawless. The audience erupted in applause.
Sofia Vergara beamed: “You guys are what AGT is all about. You were amazing. I loved every second.”
Howie Mandel added, “Seeing you now—at this point in your lives—it’s even more powerful. It’s beautiful.”
Simon Cowell looked like he was about to hit the Golden Buzzer himself, but host Terry Crews beat him to it—rushing to the stage, slamming the buzzer, and showering the group in confetti while proclaiming, “These are my people!” Simon laughed in good spirits, admitting he would’ve done it himself if he could.
Now, the Funkateers are headed straight to the live shows.
As Terry wiped away tears, he summed it up best: “This proves age ain’t nothing but a number.”
