Miley Cyrus Breaks Her Silence on Her “Astounding” Engagement to Maxx Morando

Just hours after sparking engagement rumors with a ring on that finger at the global Avatar: Fire and Ash World Premiere on Monday night, Miley Cyrus broke her silence on her decision to walk down the aisle with longtime boyfriend Maxx Morando. While chatting with People on Tuesday, December 2, he “Flowers” singer shared how her decision to get engaged at 33 has “astounded” her while opening up about taking this next step in her relationship with her musician beau of four years.

The former Disney star got candid about how this relationship compares to those in the past, explaining, “The detail that I can share is that for us, our privacy and us kind of keeping it small has been something that I’ve been astounded that I’ve actually been able to have and being able to kind of have more choice.” Cyrus, who finalized her divorce from ex-husband Liam Hemsworth in 2020, said that her mindset about keeping her relationships out of the spotlight has also changed with age. “I think it’s also being older, being more protective of what I’m open to sharing,” she added.

While Cyrus chose to hard-launch her engagement with Morando with a PDA-packed red carpet appearance, it’s likely the Liily drummer proposed to her at least a few weeks prior. The Hannah Montana alum rang in her 33rd birthday with a black-and-white post on Instagram on November 23 that showed her flashing her chunky east-west, cushion-cut diamond ring, which is a bespoke Jacquie Aiche design.

Cyrus also shared rare comments about where she is in her life right now, connecting it with themes from the Avatar: Fire and Ash film, including “love, family resilience, and kind of reconnection and that stronger together idea.” The multi-hyphenate, who recently reconciled with her dad Billy Ray Cyrus, explained, “I thought it was kind of perfectly thematic and aligned with where I am in my life now.”
