In 2022, America’s Got Talent witnessed one of its most unique and emotionally charged auditions when 11-year-old Madison Taylor Baez, known as “Maddie,” was “discovered” right in the middle of the audience. During a commercial break, a microphone was passed around for fans to sing—a common way to keep the energy up—but when Maddie began her rendition of “Amazing Grace,” the entire atmosphere of the Pasadena Civic Auditorium changed. Her voice, possessing a soulful maturity and power that seemed impossible for her age, forced a shocked Simon Cowell to return from backstage to see who was singing.
A Dream Rooted in Love
While the audience was stunned by her talent, the story behind her voice was even more moving. Maddie revealed that she had been a superfan of the show since she was four, but her inspiration for singing was deeply personal. Her father, Chris, had been battling Stage 4 colon cancer for nine years. Maddie learned to sing by serenading him during his many surgeries and chemotherapy treatments, using her music as a form of healing for her family.
The Golden Moment
After being invited onto the stage for an official audition, Maddie performed “Amazing Grace” again, this time with even more clarity and heart. The crowd was so moved that they began a thunderous chant for the Golden Buzzer. Howie Mandel, visibly “gobsmacked” by the magic of the moment, obliged, sending her straight to the live shows.
A Rising Star
Beyond the AGT stage, Maddie was already proving her versatility as an actress, having portrayed a young Selena Quintanilla in Netflix’s Selena: The Series. Her journey on AGT ended as a semi-finalist, but she left an indelible mark as a “powerhouse” who turned a commercial break into a life-changing career milestone.
