The morning after our wedding, my husband threw a filthy kitchen rag in my face in front of 22 relatives and told me to get on my knees, so I went upstairs and quietly packed a bag

The mother-in-law spills meat sauce on the young bride's dress at a family breakfast

The morning after our wedding was supposed to be calm. At least, that was how I had pictured it.

Mark and I had spent the night before accepting congratulations until almost midnight, posing for photos, dancing and listening to one toast after another. The next day his family decided to throw a big late breakfast at my mother-in-law’s house.

More than twenty people sat around the long table. Everyone was going through the wedding photos and laughing about yesterday’s games, while my mother-in-law kept walking between the kitchen and the dining room, never taking her eyes off me.

Even before the wedding she had said a few odd things. “In our family, women know their place.” Back then I took it as a bad joke. Mark always laughed and said his mother was just old-fashioned, and I believed him.

As I walked past the table, my mother-in-law suddenly knocked a big bowl of greasy meat sauce with her elbow. Some of it splashed onto the floor and onto the hem of my light dress.

“Well, look at that,” she said, not even trying to hide her smile. “See the mess you made.”

I stared at her. “But you’re the one who knocked the bowl over.”

The room got noticeably quieter. My mother-in-law slowly turned to her son.

The husband orders his new wife to clean the floor in front of the family

Mark set down his fork, stood up and walked over to the kitchen counter. I assumed he was getting napkins. Instead he picked up an old kitchen rag covered in dark grease and food stains.

He walked over and threw it straight into my face. The cloth hit my cheek and dropped onto my shoulder.

A few relatives looked away. Nobody said a word.

Mark looked at me with complete calm. “Pick it up.”

I slowly took the rag off my shoulder. “What?”

“You heard me. Get down on your knees and wipe the floor.”

Someone at the table let out a nervous laugh. Mark stepped closer. “Better get used to it now. You’re a wife, not a guest. Nobody here is going to clean up after you.”

My mother-in-law stood by the table, enjoying every second.

That was when it finally hit me. They had planned all of this ahead of time. They were probably waiting for me to cry, to argue or to try to defend myself.

Instead, I just looked at Mark. The man in front of me had nothing in common with the one I had dated for almost two years. Only the day before, he had held my hand in front of our guests, promised to protect me and called me the most precious person in his life.

Now he was clearly loving the fact that twenty-two relatives were watching him put his new wife “in her place.”

Suddenly I smiled. Mark frowned. “What’s so funny?”

“Nothing. I’m just going upstairs to change first. My dress is ruined.”

My mother-in-law nodded right away. “Go ahead. Then come back down and clean all this up.”

Mark even stepped aside to let me pass. That is probably why none of them suspected a thing.

I calmly climbed to the second floor, went into the bedroom and shut the door. The boxes and envelopes from our wedding were still piled on the bed. We had not even opened some of them.

The young wife packs a bag with documents and wedding gifts upstairs

I pulled a travel bag out of the closet. First went my passport, my bank cards and my documents. Then I gathered every wedding gift we had received: the envelopes from my relatives, the jewelry, the box of cash from my parents and several expensive presents.

Ten minutes later the bag was almost full.

From downstairs came Mark’s voice. “Did you fall asleep up there?”

I opened the bedroom window. Right below it was the small roof of an extension, and next to it stood an outdoor staircase the workers had used while renovating the house.

Getting down was much easier than I expected. A few minutes later I was walking along the next street, calling a taxi.

My phone started ringing almost instantly. First Mark. Then my mother-in-law. Then Mark again. I did not answer once.

That same day I went to stay with a friend. The next morning I called a lawyer and filed for divorce.

Later Mark sent me a long message. He claimed it had all been a family joke and that I had overreacted.

But after that morning, nobody could ever convince me that throwing a dirty rag in your wife’s face and ordering her onto her knees is a joke.
