Perry, 49, was more than just an actor known for appearances in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Blue Crush. He was also a respected North Shore waterman who dedicated eight years of his life to Honolulu Ocean Safety.
According to local officials, the tragedy occurred on June 23, shortly before 1 p.m., near Goat Island. Emergency services received a call reporting that a surfer had been attacked and suffered multiple bite wounds.
Lifeguards rushed to the scene and brought Perry back to shore on a Jet Ski. Emergency medical personnel attempted to respond, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Perry as a dedicated public servant whose courage and commitment had made a lasting impact on the community.
Honolulu Ocean Safety officials also remembered him as a lifeguard who was loved by everyone who knew him.
For those who knew Perry personally, his death was especially painful because the ocean had been such an important part of his life.
His wife, Emilia Perry, described the tragedy with heartbreaking words, saying that although his passing was devastating, he had left the world doing what he loved, in the place he loved.
Perry had earned a reputation as an accomplished surfer, particularly for his skill at Pipeline, one of the most famous and challenging surf breaks in the world.
He was born and raised on Oahu and became deeply connected to Hawaii’s surfing community. He was also reportedly close friends with musician and fellow surfer Jack Johnson.
