Great comedy is all about timing, and 32-year-old stand-up comedian Cris Sosa timed his moment perfectly when he stepped onto the America’s Got Talent stage. Hailing from Umble, Texas (spelled like “Humble,” as he playfully clarified), Cris brought 13 years of stand-up experience and a massive dream: to become one of the greatest entertainers of all time.
As a comedian of Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Mexican descent who doesn’t speak Spanish, Cris immediately struck gold with relatable, self-deprecating humor. He kicked off his set by joking about his parents learning English right alongside him, leading to a hilarious imitation of the broken English they used to raise him. He then shifted gears to mimic local country folks in Texas, perfectly capturing how they can have full-blown conversations while saying absolutely nothing at all.
However, the undeniable highlight of his routine came when Cris joked that what he lacks in language skills, he makes up for on the dance floor. He launched into a side-splitting reenactment of his father teaching him how to dance salsa and bachata, describing the hilariously bizarre instructions as pretending to “give yourself a wedgie” and then trying to “take it out with no hands.” His physical comedy and animated dance moves had the entire auditorium—and the judges’ table—erupting into uncontrollable laughter.
The judges were unanimous in their praise. Simon Cowell noted how incredibly difficult it is for a comedian to hook an audience in the first 30 seconds, commending Cris for delivering a routine where every single part was funny. Sofia Vergara expressed immense pride, sharing that she personally related to and loved every single joke. After earning a resounding four “yeses” from the panel, Cris Sosa officially proved he is a force to be reckoned with this season.
